The video-sharing site, founded by Steve Chen, Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim, has, in three short years, become the third-most-visited website worldwide, trailing only Yahoo and YouTube's parent company, Google.

The site's popularity has not gone unnoticed by American political candidates, including those currently running for president. Everyone from Hillary to Barack to John to Mike has a YouTube presence, and one candidate, Republican Ron Paul, began his quest for the White House with a campaign limited almost exclusively to the internet.



YouTube's reach is enormous. There are a lot of funniest online videos. Although exact numbers are unavailable, YouTube (which is available in 12 languages) has millions of registered users and a constantly expanding video archive believed to top 100 million files.

Video Chat Software Introduces Recording

A new version of video chat software ooVoo released this week allows users to record chats, perhaps to post them to video-sharing sites like YouTube or just to keep them for posterity.



The new 1.5 version of ooVoo also adds features found in other chat programs: visual effects and the ability to call U.S. phones. The first two hours of calls are free. The company hasn't said how it plans to charge for additional calling. There are so many people enjoying YouTube now.

Apple Inc.'s iChat does multiparty video chats, and a recording feature was introduced with Leopard, the company's latest operating system.

Chatham gets YouTube attention; worldwide attention on local filmers

The Internet generation is helping to bring some recognition to Chatham-Kent via the popular video-sharing website YouTube.

Chris Spafford, 31, owner of High Five skateboard shop in Chatham, has a video that's had more than 530,000 views and it's one of the best rated videos on the internet.

Within a month of posting it on YouTube, Ball said he received an e-mail from screamkings.com, an online thriller movie website, asking if he wanted to have his film featured in a compilation DVD of filmmakers around the world, titled "Twisted Vol. 4."



He honed his skills while doing promotional videos and filming Remembrance Day ceremonies as a student at Lambton Kent Composite School in Dresden.

Nolan Ball, 23, has a budding film career thanks to videos shot in Chatham - with local actors - that were noticed on You Tube.

He said the video features local skate boarders.

"A lot of people like to go online and watch goofy things, so they like to see people fall on their skateboards," he said.

YouTube, MySpace ... In search for foreign intelligence

Among the most valuable sources, one top spook says, are blogs, MySpace and other Web 2.0 hallmarks.


The speech was posted this week on SecrecyNews, the blog of the Federation of American Scientists Project on Government Secrecy.

"I would not have thought of You Tube as an obvious source of intelligence," Steven Aftergood, the project's director, told InfromationWeek, "but I think it's a good sign that the Open Source Center is looking at it, and at other new media."

Relax watching YouTube: US online animation community MyToons has launched its own branded channel on YouTube, following in the footsteps of Israeli rival Aniboom.



MyToons is competing with others like Aniboom, which is itself aiming to become the number one destination for amateur and professional animators on the web and which launched its own branded channel on YouTube last summer.

"We have thousands of animators utilising our free upload and streaming system to broadcast their work to the world," said MyToons co-founder and president Paul Ford.

YouTube Veterans Launch Howcast.com

A handful of former Google and YouTube employees are launching a how-to video site today with $8 million in funding in a round led by Tudor Investment Corp., the company announced today.

Howcast offers a “directors program” for emerging filmmakers to contribute videos to the site. “Online video is generally split into two worlds: user-generated content and professional studio content,” Jason Liebman, CEO and co-founder of Howcast, said in a statement. “We think there’s an opportunity to bridge these worlds, and instructional video is a perfect place to start.”

UTUBE: You wouldn't mistake the "electro-synth spaz group" Yip Yip, with their checkered bodysuits and homemade multifunctional music consoles, for the average local bar band. But they're not all form and no function; this band's music practices what their outfits preach.



Microsoft has been struggling to make an impact in online video, and is hoping that by increasing the amount of 'big brand' content on its site it can attract larger audiences. In the UK, only 735,000 users visited MSN video in December, according to Nielsen Online, whereas more than ten million went to U-Tube.

Announcing deals with Sony BMG and MTV Networks that will deliver music and other videos to its MSN platform, Microsoft said that it was hoping to cash in on the growing online video advertising market, which it expected would be the fastest growing category of adverts on the web "for the forseeable future."

As one might suspect, the list includes some real gems: Pickle Surprise, Rev. X on the "Spirit of Truth," JacMac & RadBoy, Devo on Live at Five (below), a response to "YouTube's System Is Totally Flawed," Christopher Hitchens on Jerry Falwell's Death, a Cardiacs video, and video art from Nam June Paik.

YouTube, which was visited by 122 million people in December, already has deals with the major record labels which let them take a cut of advertising revenue resulting from visits to their channels on the site.

Scores of Web sites are offering computer users a chance to watch video clips of the Super Bowl commercials, among them AOL, MSNBC, MySpace, Spike and YouTube.
